Some of the reasoning behind this:

Magic weapons/armor (in normal times) were made by magical smiths. (Think sort of dwarves). In modern times (not apocalypse) there were human smiths who learned weaker versions of the old magical smithing. In post apocalypse times, if a town has more than 100 people there is a 1% chance there is a smith who knows/is learning the magical smithing.

“common” and spell items are occasionally limited to one type of user. Often this mirrored weapons in that warriors were favored. This was due to requests by warriors, or a race, or a class, or leftover from some war/battle.

On even rarer occasion a diamond power is limited this way. This is rare and was usually due to the finder of the diamond having accidently attuning themselves to the diamond when the innate power is first brought forth. (Note this is also why the powers are slightly fluctuated, this and a flaw in the diamond).

Damage to person and items by spells, etc.

In general, when hit from the front by a wave/beam/ball/etc. the chance of a backpack and items being destroyed is “fairly low” (things like Doomkill are different). If you are hit from behind the backpack has a fairly HIGH chance of being destroyed/damaged. Additionally the fragility of items is roughly as follows (most fragile to least):

Scroll

Rune

Symbol

Rods/sticks/glass balls/etc.

Most common items (on a gem).

Most spell items (on a gem).

Most weapon/armor items

Most predetermined items

Items “at the ready” are inherently exposed to more risk. While you can mitigate this a little bit by hiding it beneath armor or in a box, those are LESS at ready and if in the front (which most “at ready” means) they are at more risk.

Armor/Weapons: while not carefully tracked, the wear and tear on armor and weapons means that SOONER OR LATER the magic fails. There are exceptions of course.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Items used by only one class, or other “usable only by” In general a number of items are usuable only by one class, or race, often warriors.
